Inward Disciplines

By Richard Damon , 27 December 2025

The Inward Discipline deal most directly with the relationship between the Individual and God. The form a foundation to build the rest of the Disciplines on, and a spiritually focused life.

The Inward Disciplines are:

  • Meditation: A Discipline of looking for and listening to God
  • Prayer: A Discipline of talking to, and asking for help (especial for others), from God.
  • Fasting: A Discipline focused on depending on God.
  • Study: A Discipline of more active looking for and understanding God and his nature

It should be noted that the practice of these Disciplines will often intertwine, for instance, most of the time you begin a dedicated time to one of the Discipline, you should probably spend some time in Prayer to focus on dedicating the time, and if you spend extended time focusing on a Discipline, you likely want to spend some "break time" switching to some Meditation to see if God wants to give you some Feedback.

Each of these Disciplines will be more fully described in the following pages, each corresponding to the chapter in Foster's Book.
